The Gitanmaax Chief and Council would like to provide an important update to all Band Members regarding the long-standing matter of land allotment requests for Lots 6 and 7-2 at Anlaw. Together, these lots represent over 90 acres of Gitanmaax reserve land.
Honouring a Commitment to Due Process
When the current Council took office, we made a commitment to honour and complete the formal review process initiated by the previous Council. This process was designed to address the complex and long-standing land dispute in a fair, transparent, and inclusive manner, with the best interests of all Gitanmaax Members at heart.
A Rigorous Multi-Year Review
The review process followed detailed written procedures developed and upheld by past Councils. It included:
A written submission and evidence phase for all claimants;
A thorough review and analysis by an Ad-Hoc Council Committee;
Final deliberation and decision by Council based on the Committee’s recommendations.
All claimants received written copies of the review process in June 2021 and were given opportunities to present their information and perspectives.
Despite delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Council transitions, community crises, the loss of many Members, and changes in Committee membership due to conflicts of interest, Council remained committed to completing the process with integrity.
Final Decision
On November 25, 2024, after careful review and deliberation, Council unanimously voted to deny the allotment requests for Lots 6 and 7-2. Only Councillors without conflicts of interest participated in the decision. Written explanations outlining the reasons for the decision were provided to all claimants.
As outlined in the review process, this decision is final, and the claims to Lots 6 and 7-2 are now formally concluded.
Preserving Land for Collective Benefit
Gitanmaax reserve lands are held collectively for the benefit of all Members. Allotting land to individuals permanently removes it from collective control, limiting our ability to plan for housing, infrastructure, cultural preservation, economic development, and future generations.
Council must balance individual interests with our shared responsibility to preserve our land base. With a growing population and many Members seeking to return home, Council determined that maintaining these lands under collective Band ownership best serves the long-term interests of our community.
Looking Ahead
Council and Staff continue to advance the Gitanmaax Comprehensive Community Plan, with active Member involvement. This includes exploring a food sovereignty feasibility study and project at Anlaw, ensuring the land continues to serve all Members for generations to come.
We thank all Members for their patience and participation throughout this process.
Respectfully,
Gitanmaax Chief and Council
