Gitanmaax Band Council is providing an important update regarding the Gitanmaax Community Grant program.
The Gitanmaax Community Grant was originally established at $200 per eligible Gitanmaax Band member, funded through tobacco revenue. In 2024, the grant was increased to $500 per eligible member using additional funds that were available at the time.
After a comprehensive review of Band finances and funding sources, Chief and Council have made the difficult decision to discontinue the Community Grant program due to the loss of tobacco revenue and the absence of other funding sources that previously supported the initiative. Over the past two years, Gitanmaax Band has not received tobacco revenue, making it unsustainable to continue the grant at this time.
Effective March 31, 2026, the Gitanmaax Community Grant has been discontinued.
Council emphasizes that this decision was not made lightly. The financial realities facing the Band require careful stewardship of available resources to ensure continued support for current and future community priorities and long-term sustainability. Council may revisit the program in the future should additional funding become available.
"We understand this change may be disappointing for many members, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. We appreciate the understanding and support of our members as we work to ensure the long-term financial stability of the Gitanmaax Band for future generations."
The Gitanmaax Band Council thanks all members for their continued support and cooperation.
